How Tax Credits Work in Ireland

Tax credits in Ireland directly reduce the amount of income tax you pay. They are not deductions from your income but rather reductions applied to your calculated tax liability. This means that a tax credit of €1,875 reduces your tax bill by exactly €1,875, regardless of whether you pay tax at 20% or 40%. Every taxpayer is entitled to certain personal tax credits, and additional credits may apply depending on your circumstances. Revenue allocates your tax credits through a Tax Credit Certificate, which your employer uses to calculate the correct amount of tax to deduct each pay period under the PAYE system.

Main Tax Credits for 2026

The Personal Tax Credit for a single person is €1,875 per year. Married couples receive €3,750 combined. The Employee Tax Credit (PAYE credit) is €1,875 for each PAYE worker, meaning a single PAYE employee benefits from combined credits of €3,750. The Earned Income Credit of €1,875 applies to self-employed individuals and proprietary directors who do not qualify for the Employee Tax Credit. Additional credits include the Single Person Child Carer Credit of €1,750, the Home Carer Credit of up to €1,800, the Age Tax Credit of €245 for those aged 65 and over, and the Incapacitated Child Credit of €3,500.

Claiming Additional Tax Credits

Beyond the standard credits, you may be entitled to credits for specific expenses. The Rent Tax Credit provides relief of up to €750 per year for qualifying tenants. Medical expenses incurred at the standard rate of 20% can be claimed as tax relief. Tuition fees for approved courses may qualify for relief at the standard rate. Flat rate expense deductions are available for certain trades and professions to cover the cost of tools, uniforms, or equipment. You can claim these through Revenue's myAccount service, and they will be added to your Tax Credit Certificate for the current year.

Maximising Your Tax Credits

To ensure you are paying the correct amount of tax, review your Tax Credit Certificate at the start of each year. If your circumstances have changed, such as getting married, having a child, or starting to pay rent, you may be entitled to additional credits that are not automatically applied. Married couples should consider how to allocate credits and rate bands between them for optimal tax efficiency. Use our PAYE calculator above to see how your credits affect your take home pay, or explore the USC calculator to understand charges that are not reduced by tax credits.
